Summer in Los Angeles Part 2

Even though most of my family lives in California, I rarely see them, even when I was still living in the state. I lived in between 6 to 16 hours drive away from all of them, so it was quite rare that I would be able to pop down for a visit on the weekend. Unfortunately this meant seeing my lovely grandmothers about once a year, if that. I was so happy that I could meet up with them while I was in Los Angeles and spend the entire day with them!

We had lunch at Marie Callendars, it was surprisingly difficult to find something on the menu that was vegetarian… I decided on the Crispy Chicken Salad, minus the chicken. I love eating (and if you continue to read the blog, you’ll see how much this lass can put away) but the definite highlight of my day was driving around the Encino Reservoir and remembering all the good times we spent there as children. My grandmother is great at telling stories, she loves to tell me about the local history and how things in the present day have been affected by the past.

We even stopped by the model air field and watched some guys fly their beautiful model airplanes.

photo-5 photo-6It was quite the show. There were probably about 30 planes and a bunch of different people working on their custom birds. There was one guy who had a trick plane and was doing some amazing flips and spins and rolls and free falls, I was impressed! My dad used to fly model air planes back in the day, although I think my mother would have killed him he he dropped the same amount of cash on these planes and some of these guys did.

It’s open to the public and they often have meets, so if you’re in the area and fancy a fun afternoon with the kids, stop by! It is very close to a large park as well, so its perfect if you’re wanting a nice picnic outside and away from the big city.

After the drive through the park and a long play date with my grandmas new dogs, we sat down and started piecing together a quilt. my grandmother is a beautiful quilter, I feel blessed to have been gifted a few of her quilts in my life, I cherish them so dearly. She is teaching a class at a community center to help underprivileged  women learn  skills, quilting being one of them. We were testing out different ideas that she had for the class and I was using my knowledge as a teacher to help her plan out the course. It was great fun! and we even pieced together a good portion of a little 4 square quilt! I quite like it, unfortunately  it is going to be raffled off and I can’t steal it, but it has given me a bit of inspiration for the next time I get my hands on my machine!

2013-08-14 15.10.12My grandma always has such wacky fabrics and odds and ends around, is like a treasure chest full of memories!! Finally around 8 o clock I had to hit the road as a television show that my grandmas have been waiting ages for was going to be on and they didn’t want to miss it!! I gave my final hugs goodbye and set fourth to Hollywood to find the beautiful people and bright lights!

stay tuned for S in LA Part 3

Sell it all; hit the road

I don’t reblog too many things on this blog…but THIS…seriously…THIS
this is my dream! sell everything and hit the road (except replace the adorable kid with an adorable corgi!) Joss and Jessa Works, you guys are amazing. I am so envious right now and I hope to be living in your shoes soon!

The Mountains Are Calling

A nice video from Dark Rye, an online magazine from Whole Foods.

Joss and Jessa Works, and their son Jack, decided to sell everything and hit the open road in an Airstream trailer, “launching into an exploration and rediscovery of America, not in search of a place to settle, but rather creating a new kind of home out of wandering.” Working and staying connected with friends and family remotely, the Works talk about the decision to upend their lives and one of their most important early lessons — slow down.

Summer in Los Angeles

To be perfectly honest, I am a Nor-Cal girl through and through. I have never enjoyed myself while I was in Southern California, except when I was in Disneyland. But the strangest thing happened while I was living in Edinburgh… I actually missed Los Angeles. I was caught off guard by these emotions, could there possibly be something in Los Angeles that I hadn’t considered before? Something that I might find enjoyable? Lets find out!2013-08-14 15.10.30The journey down Interstate 5 is dreadful, even with a full car of people, so driving it alone was near maddening. The endless stretch of dry grass, tumbleweeds, and the occasional orange grove grows old after a few hundred miles. It is one of the fastest ways to drive down to Los Angeles, but it is not the prettiest. There are more and more rest stops and fast food havens being built every time I make the journey south, they even have an In N Out or two! There is also the dreaded, but dearly loved Apricot Tree. If you are a foodie, this is definitely not the stop for you…but if you are a retro lunch box enthusiast or enjoy really bizarre gift shops, then DEFINITELY take the time to stop by and stretch your legs. The walls are lined with old lunch boxes and thermos cups, they are amazing! I have a nostalgic attachment to this place, and it will always have a spot in my heart next to the Milk Farm sign. The Apricot Tree is located right before the Grapevine, back in the way it was one of the only stops before you head up up up and down down down into the Los Angeles County.photo-4photo-3ATTENTION: If cute seaside towns and cliff side vista points are what you are seeking on your Great Californian Roadtrip, I recommend  Highway 101/1. It is a beautiful stretch of highway that runs along almost the entire coast of california, from San Diego, straight up into Oregon. It is a much longer journey, but definitely worth the time, if you have it. The first stop I made once I climbed over the Grapevine, was to visit my best friend of over a decade, Grant. He just moved to Koreatown after a year at sea on a cruise ship. I haven’t seen him since I moved and was barely able to talk to him while he was on the boat and I was in school, so it was really amazing to finally be reunited. We walked around all over Koreatown, and unfortunately I didn’t take very many pictures at all. Except for this terribly composed shot of the Catalina Liquor store. I LOVED this building…the colors and the neon signs were so retro and fabulous. I have always been drawn to old neon signs, I just think they have such a beautiful history and I can’t even imagine what they have seen over the years.2013-08-14 15.26.18

So lovely! I wish I was more pro-active about documenting all the beautiful signs I saw while I was on the road, I am stupidly embarrassed by looking like a tourist, which I know is just silly, but I always try and snap sneaky pics in passing rather than just ignoring my embarrassment and taking some really lovely shots, I am an artist after all! I shouldn’t have to justify my obsession with documenting things! Maybe I’ll look into getting a Instax or something… then I can have instant satisfaction and be able to have a fun little way to document things other than my phone. (my SLR is too heavy and expensive to carry around with me every day)

Home…

I’m so happy to be back in the ‘Burgh! Finally over the post-holiday blues and back on a somewhat normal sleeping pattern. Posts all about the trips I took July will be up soon, I have been so busy with life since I’ve been back I haven’t had a spare moment to blog in weeks.

after 5 weeks of wild adventures, travels, and voyages… I am back home in Edinburgh. I have been resting, dealing with real life (bills, laundry, etc), and scanning the negatives of some film I took.

More to come soon! Stay tuned for updates from Los Angeles up to Portland Oregon!  But first, some serious cuddle time with my wee man cub Pip.

Missing my Co Pilot

I feel like Han Solo without Chewbacca 😦

But it is far too hot in California for those little fluffy buns

IMAG1335I haven’t been without him for more than a few hours since I rescued him, it has been so hard to be this far away from him
Only two more weeks!! and then hopefully next summer I’ll have my airstream and we can cruise the country together like old times

Los Angeles

I have been so busy getting everything planned for my road trip to Portland that I haven’t been able to post about my short visit to LA…

Update from the road!!

San francisco was absolutely amazing!! Rob and I cruised around all over the city; Haight street, where he lost his mind in Amoeba Records, down to Ocean Beach (we even saw dolphins doing flips in the waves!!) Then we drove down to the Golden Gate Bridge which was mostly covered in fog, pretty typical for a summer day in San  Fransisco, but we walked around Crissy Park, and looked at some big ass sculptures from the SFMoMA, which was totally amazing and DEFINITELY worth seeing if you’re visiting the Bay Area.

We ended our day with dinner at Chai Yo on Polk Street with my lovely sister and her boyfriend. The day was full of some touristy type stuff and some more local’s secret stuff (like the amazing grilled cheese at Devil’s Teeth in Ocean Beach) but overall it was an excellent day in the city and a great first day in America for Rob!!

More pictures to follow, it difficult to make long updates from my phone!!
